Johann Elias Ridinger

The Jump at a Sow Garden

Pen and brown ink and black chalk, brown and gray wash on paper.. 33,6 x 24,8 cm.
Signed and dated lower centre: J. E. Ridinger fec. A[ugusta]. V[indelicorum]. 1728 Jun: / in Sylva ad viv[um] delineav[it] (betitelt:) Der Einsprung an einem Sau Garten (und gewidmet:) Honoratis: Amico / Dr. Will..

The present sheet is closely related to the copperplate engraving of the same name, which was published in 1729 as sheet 20 from the series of 36 copperplate engravings "Vollkommene und gründliche Vorstellungen der vortrefflichen Fürsten-Lust oder der Edlen Jagdbarkeit". It was the prelude to a series of textbook-like hunting series and the first series to be published by the artist's own publishing house. Sheets 19 to 22 show four different ways of hunting wild boar: "How the pigs are caught with nets. The jumping in at the sow's garden. How pigs are hunted" and "The hunt for pigs".
In contrast to the copperplate engraving, this version of "Der Einsprung an dem Sau Garten" shows only the central scene: pigs enter the trap, fall in grunting and land ungently on the ground. In the detailed German and French caption of the engraving, Ridinger explains the construction and use of such a trap.
The format and the rounded upper margin of the drawing indicate that it was originally conceived for another series. For the aforementioned series of engravings, Ridinger extended the scene at the edges with trees, added a few pigs and brought it into a rectangular format.
