The present work is not meant to be an exact representation of a specific place, but rather a capriccio in which the Amsterdam painter Jacobus Storck, the elder brother of the painter Abraham Storck, combined various architectural motifs to create a fanciful view. Nevertheless, one can probably assume that it is based on a view of the Rhine, especially since the artist undertook a sojourn along this river to study in around 1670. Fred G. Meijer therefore dates the present work to the time after 1670.
