Andreas Achenbach

The Return of the Pilot Boat

Oil on panel. 49.5 x 61 cm.
Signed lower left: A. Achenbach.

The back of the panel bears an old adhesive label with a stamp "Eduard Schulte / Koeln [rest not legible]" as well as the handwritten inscription "Professor Andreas Achenbach. / "Heimkehr des Lotsenbootes". gem. 1880."
The Eduard Schulte Gallery (or: Kunstsalon) was founded in Düsseldorf in the mid-19th century, but also had a branch in Richartzstrasse in Cologne, to which the adhesive label on the reverse of our painting probably refers. From 1886 onwards, the gallery was also represented in Berlin, where it is said to have had some of the most modern exhibition rooms and was the first company of its kind in Berlin to use electricity.
