A painted and lacquered kiri-wood kyôgen mask of Buaku. Edo period, 17/18th century

The identifying features of this mask are the wide row of upper teeth biting into the lower lip and drawing it inside, the large eyes and wide nostrils and bulging cheeks. A brand seal to the revers, two large paper labels the upper inscription reading Mitsounaga (Demé ...nenhyou?) XVIIIe and the numbers 1000 1615-1672, the lower one reading Buaku ... Traces of usage. Mounted on a metal stand.

Judging by the paperlabels and their inscription, probably from a French collection around 1870
