An oval-shaped aka raku chawan. Kyoto. 18th century

Of shallow shape (hiragata) with horizontal grooves to the inside and outside, covered with a salmon-red glaze, on the almost flat base an incised kiln mark character possibly reading ya. Chip to the rim. Old wooden box with a single character on the lid and an inscription including the date of Bunka 2 (1805), possibly the name of the owner and possibly the name of the tea master. the same inscription to the outside of the box, and a paper label inscribed Aka-raku chawan yahen? (possibly the name of the chawan). Silk bag (shifuku).
Height 5.5 cm; length 14.7 cm

The kiln mark is illustrated in "Catalogue of the Morse Collection of Japanese Pottery", Reprint Tokyo 1979, p. 267 and is read "ya".
