A Kuro-Oribe chawan. Mino area. Early Edo period, 17th century

Of kutsu-gata type, on a slightly irregular foot, the body covered with a thick dull black glaze and diagonal stripes and vines in iron-grey beneath a light crackled glaze. Wooden box, the lid inscribed: kuro-oribe chawan, on the reverse of the lid inscribed: Kuro-Oribe chawan / mei Chôkan (long leasure) and the name of a tea master with his kaô, on the box itself a paper label inscribed: Kutsugata chawan / kodai Kuro-Oribe /mei Chôkan / Matsuo Fusen Sôshô sho tsuke and sealed. Silk bag (shifuku).
