A large gilt copper repousse figure of Tathagata Shakyamuni (Shakya Thub-pa). Tibet, 19th century

The enlightened Buddha is seated in padmansana on a double lotus base, with the right hand performing the gesture of earth witness (bhumisparsha mudra), the left resting in avakasha mudra, palm up on the lap, the palm engraved with a vishvavajra (double vajra). He is dressed in a robe that is close-fitting to the body, the hems of the robe are engraved with floral decoration. Cult painting on the locks of hair and the ushnisha, remnants of painting on the eyes. The throne base sealed with a copper plate and decorated with an engraved vihsvavajra in a round medallion.
