A thangka of the preaching buddha. Tibet, 19th century

The ruler of the northern paradise is enthroned in padmasnana on a leafy lotus cushion and holds the right hand in front of the chest in the gesture of discourse vitarka mudra, the left rests in the lap and holds the patra (alms pot) as the dignified mark of the head of the intermediate paradise, from the pot fruits sprout as a symbol of spiritual fertility. He is surrounded by individual scenes and simultaneous representations in other contexts with people, temples and buildings in the midst of a varied landscape. The dharmapala Vaisravana with flame aureole, the god of wealth and protector (lokapala) of the north direction, appears at the bottom of the picture and holds a dhvaja (umbrella standard) in his right hand and a pearl-spitting nakula (mungo) in his left. He sits sideways on a white, saddled snow lion with its head turned backwards, tempera on canvas. paint losses. Framed under glass.
