Adolph von Menzel

From Heinrich von Kleist's "Der zerbrochene Krug" (The Broken Jug)

Black ink. 15.5 x 18 cm.
Monogrammed lower left: AvM.

The pen and ink drawing is in the original mat with the following inscription:
"Original drawing from the illustrations for the jubilee edition of Heinrich von Kleist's comedy "Der zerbrochene Krug" I. Scene.

(Given for the "Art Table" in the Bazaar of the "Deutsch-Nationalen Frauenbund" Autumn 1887) Adolf Menzel".
This is a study of the opening image of Menzel's woodcut illustrations for Kleist's Jubilee Edition, published in 1877 by A. Hofmann & Co. in Berlin.

It depicts the village judge Adam, sitting in his courtroom bandaging his leg, wounded by the consequences of the night's adventure, while the clerk Licht holds a mirror in front of his equally wounded face.
