A German hand forged silver niello beaker.

Tall, slightly tapering repoussé silver beaker with polished outer surface, decorated beneath the rim with a frieze of fine abstract niello. The gilt interior with slight martelé. No hallmarks. H 11.5 cm. Weight 211.89 g.

This chased cup was created in the goldsmith class of Elisabeth Treskow. The special task was to decorate the conical wall in niello technique, which requires a special hand skill. The niello paste, a mixture of silver, copper, lead and sulfur, is melted into the engraved base and becomes liquid when heated, posing the risk of running. For this perfectly executed work, the young goldsmith student received a special commendation
