A chest made for the Würzburg potter guild

Walnut and burr walnut, ebony and boxwood veneer on painted and gilt softwood, brass lock plate, iron lock and hinges, the interior lined with marbled paper, the side compartment of oak. Rectangular chest on paw feet with slanted angles embellished with carved scrolls. The domed lid with a locked, sliding compartment and engraved tin plaque. One lidded side compartment with concealed drawers. Minor replacements to the veneer of the lid, wear to the gilt and painted parts. H 42.5, W 57, D 38 cm.
Around 1779.

The engraved inscription on the tin plaque provides information about the commission of the chest, which was made by the potter guild:
"Anno 1779 hat diese Haffner-Zunfft Lathen verfertigen lassen der Wohl Ehr und vor Achtbahre He Johann Alexander Völer Maynzer fürttel Meister und Haffner Schultheis wie auch Einer Burger Sotalit deren He Burger da hier in Würzburg gewessener Preffect ist zum Schultheis erwehlt worden den 13. July 1761".
