A Montbéliard marquetry bureau with the stamp of Abraham-Nicolas Couleru

Walnut and burr walnut veneer on softwood with gilt bronze and wrought iron mountings. Decorated on all sides to be viewed in the round. Bombé-form cabinet with two rows of three drawers on slender serpentine supports. The slanted fall front writing surface flanked by tiered rows of drawers and compartments. Repeatedly stamped "ANC MONBELIARD". H 101, W 100, D 59 cm.

Elegance and Harmony

Abraham-Nicolas Couleru (1717 – 1812) was born in Montbéliard/ Mömpelgard, which at the time belonged to Württemberg. He came from a long line of cabinetmakers and apprenticed in Paris, where he resided from 1739 – 46.
