An imperial underglaze-blue and iron-red dragon dish. Qianlong six-character mark in underglaze-blue and of the period (1736-1795)

In the centre a five-clawed dragon in iron-red flying above an underglaze-blue and white wavy ground. On the rounded outer wall nine iron-red dragons. Six-character Qianlong seal mark in underglaze-blue at the base.
Diameter 17.4 cm

Stylistically, the decoration imitates models of the early Ming dynasty. The Nine Dragons were considered a symbol of imperial authority. A pair of similar dishes were in the Edward T. Chow Collection, auctioned by Sotheby Parke Bernet, Hong Kong, 25 November 1980, lot 124. Another similar bowl is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum New York, inv. 1976.403.1
