A bamboo tonkotsu and kiseruzutsu. Osaka. Early 20th century

The tobacco container in the form of a double-walled basket made of irregularly woven bamboo splints, signed Gengensai. Ivory ojime of a crouching hare with red inlaid eyes, signed Kyûsai in an oval reserve. Bamboo kiseruzutsu of senryûzutsu type, decorated in engraving with rooster and pecking hen under carnations, signed Kyûsai tô with kaô. Inlaid eyelet made of bone. Fine short crack.
Length of the kiseruzutsu 20.7 cm

Hirai Kyûsai (1879-1938) of Osaka used the signature Kyûsai (Dove Studio) until 1927, after this date his artist name is pronounced the same, but was written with different characters.
