A boxwood netsuke of a dragon inside a mikan. Tanba. Mid-19th century

Carved with a dragon winding through a mikan (tangerine), the head breaking through the fruit's skin, the large leaf with veins in ukibori and engraving, with crisply carved scales and inlaid single eye pupil. Signed Sadanobu within an oval raised reserve. The second stem missing.
Height 2.4 cm; width 3.8 cm

Typical work of a follower of Naitô Toyomasa (1773-1856), who is regarded as the originator of this netsuke subject.
