A Tibetan Thangka of Palden Lhamo. Late 19th/early 20th century

The dark blue-skinned wrathful guardian goddess with flaming hair and a skull crown riding her mule over the sea of blood of her slain enemies. Her bridle of poisonous snakes, the bag filled with evil diseases that Lhamo scatters against demons hangs from the flank next to the mule's additional eye, divination dice dangleling down at the front. She is sitting with chained ankles on the skin of her slain son whose knotted limbs turn it into a saddle blanket, holding danda and phurbu in her right hands, a snake and a mirror in her left. Above her, seated on a lotus Buddha Shakyamuni flanked by Manjushri on the right and Shyamatara on the left. Silk mounting.
