A silver gilt communion chalice made for the counts of Hohenlohe

Six-lobed base supporting a large, tapering cup with a flaring rim. The basal ring engraved with the dedication "Iussu Illustriss. Com. Dni. Caroli Ludovici et Dni. Ioh. Friderici de Hohenlohe: Fratr. Ranouatus et amplior Fatus Anno 1704" Daneben "Mens: Gbr. Wigt 26 Loth 1/4".
Öhringen/Württemberg, marks of Johannes Schmetz, dated 1704.

Öhringen became the residence of Count Johann Friedrich I of Hohenlohe (1617 - 1702) in 1677. The chalice appears to have been donated by his sons Carl Ludwig (later Count of Hohenlohe-Weikersheim, 1674 - 1756) and Johann Friedrich II (later Count of Hohenlohe-Neuenstein-Öhringen, 1683 - 1765), who ruled the county together following their father's death until 1707.
