A Meissen porcelain cup and saucer commemorating the completion of the Prince Elector's palace in Koblenz

Painted with a portrait of Prince Elector Clemens Wenzeslaus in a forget-me-not surround, the saucer with a view of the princely residence in an identical surround, labelled 'Coblenz' on a Classical writing tablet. Blue crossed swords mark with star and 4 (saucer), gold 3 (cup), remnants of a purple mark (saucer). H of cup 6.6, D of saucer 13.9 cm.
Circa 1793.

Clemens Wenzeslaus of Saxony (1739 - 1812), son of King August III of Saxony, became Prince Bishop of Freising and Regensburg in 1764, and Prince Elector of Trier and Prince Bishop of Augsburg in 1768. He had Philippsburg Castle in Ehrenbreitstein extended by Pierre Michel d'Ixnare and Antoine-François Peyre from 1777 to 1793 to create a more imposing structure befitting his new position.
