Born in Florence in 1886, Sirio Tofanari is today considered, along with Rembrandt Bugatti, the most important Italian animal sculptor of the modern era. He was famous for his precise observation and ability to capture animals in their natural poses. He deepened his knowledge during his studies in London, where he visited zoological gardens and the anatomical animal collections at the Natural History Museum in South Kensington. Back home, he received numerous commissions for public sculptures. He participated in fairs and exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale every year as of 1909. His works could also be seen internationally, in San Francisco, Buenos Aires and Brussels. He moved to Milan in 1937, where he died a distinguished man in 1969.
