Diana and Actaeon

Oil on canvas (relined). 87.5 x 133 cm.

This highly decorative composition draws on Mannerist models and the art of the Rudolphine court. It is possible that the motif was based on various engravings. The wooded landscape recalls Tempesta, the sinuous figures Hans von Aachen and Joachim Wtewael, artists who repeatedly depicted the theme of Diana and Actaeon from Ovid's Metamorphoses, which was extremely popular around 1600.

Provenance

Countess Melanie von Habsburg-Lothringen. - South German private ownership.
