A large blue and white brushpot. Kangxi period (1662-1722)

Cylindrical bitong with slightly concave wall, decorated in underglaze-blue with a river and mountain landscape as well as a literary scene. In a pavilion two scholars are playing the board game Weiqi, next to them a lady and servants bringing tea, three soldiers arriving on horseback are delivering a letter. An engraved band with vine decoration under the rim and at the foot. Unglazed, flat base, ground rim.
Height 22 cm; diameter 22.2 cm

The scene is probably an episode from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, in which the warlord Liu Bei visits the war strategist Zhuge Liang in his cottage to recruit him as an advisor.
