A rare imperial lotus bowl. Daoguang period (1820-1850)
On the outer wall finely decorated in iron-red and gold with twelve lotus blossoms and tendrils. On the bottom a four-character mark Shendetang zhi (''Hall of Prudent Virtue'') in iron-red in regular script. Hairline cracks.
Height 7.4 cm; diameter 17.3 cm
The Shendetang ("Hall of Prudent Virtue") was built in 1831 in the imperial summer palace Yuanmingyuan and was the residence and working place of Emperor Daoguang when he was there. The porcelains with Twelve Lotus Flower decoration were made in the 18th year of his reign, according to records in the palace archives.
