A rare imperial narcissus tray. Tongzhi mark and of the period (1862-1874)

Of square shape standing on four feet, the outer wall decorated in famille rose and gold on a yellow ground with a decoration of shou characters, each surrounded by five bats between swastikas and peaches. On the rim a meander border, Four-character mark Tongzhi in iron red in regular script.
Diameter 20.3 x 20.3 cm; height 6.5 cm

It is assumed that the tableware with this decoration was commissioned for a birthday banquet by the Empress Dowager Cixi. Bowls with the same decoration are kept in the collection of the Palace Museum in Beijing. A sample drawing of the decoration is also kept there, including a specification of the ordered porcelains which includes a pair of narcissus trays.
