A Maharashtra copper alloy altar of Durga. Central India. Early 19th century

Seated in lalitasana on a cushion above a flat base, the main hands holding sword and bowl, the subsidiary hands holding trident and hourglass drum, the pedestal with two rising lions and a buffalo head on the left, the back plate displaying a round arch with a central five-headed naga, two makara and kirttimukha. The five rings on the back serve for inserting decorative elements.
