A Bizen vase. 19th century

Of nearly cylindrical shape, dented and with distorted neck, incised decorations to the body partly covered by an ash glaze. Triangular kama-shirushi mark to the base. Modern wooden box, the lid inscribed: Ko-Bizen tsukubai hanaire, the reverse inscribed Edo makki no saku (made in the late Edo period), followed by three measurements and the kama-shirushi mark, signed Katsura Matasaburō with kaō.
Height 15.3 cm

Katsura Matasaburō 桂又三郎 (1901-1986) did extensive research on old Bizen ceramics and became a sought-after connoisseur in this field. Many wooden boxes for Bizen ceramics bear his inscriptions including the measurements of the pieces (height, diameter at the mouth and base) and the kama-shirushi (kiln mark) in his distinctive, deliberately awkward writing.
