A fine Sōten school iron tsuba. Around 1700

Of round shape, carved in openwork with four Chinese scholars engaged in the Four Accomplishments (kinki shoga), the playing of the qin, playing chess, writing calligraphy and painting, surrounded by trees and ivy. Details in gold and silver. Signed Gōshū Hikone jū Shusōshi Kitagawa Sōun sei. Rim lined with sentoku.
