An ivory netsuke of a Tokaidō porter with Chōkarō's gourd. First half 19th century

The tiny kumosuke lifts a huge gourd from which a horse emerges in allusion to Chōkaro Sennin, here the porter surely wishes to be able to order the horse to transport him to where ever he wishes, just as Chōkarō was able to. Right foreleg of the horse damaged, damage to the porter's legs, partly hidden by the oval plaque with the seal script character "tomi" (wealth) on the underside. Old collector's number 786.
Height 7.8 cm
