Five Tibetan thangka of Acaryas. Late 19th century

Depicting the teachers, authors, and commentators of the sacred scriptures (sutra) and knowledge bearers of Buddhist traditions, each enthroned in a landscape.

a) Acarya Nagarjuna (1st/2nd century), seated in ardhaparyanka, hands in dharmacakramudra, preaching to a disciple at his feet.

b) Acarya Asanga (c. 290-360), seated in sattvaparyanka, explaining a point of his philosophy while focussing on a scripture, his right hand is raised in samanamudra.

c) and d) Acarya Vasubandhu (316-396), seated in sattvaparyanka or with his left foot upright, his upper body erect. Similar to the posture of an archer, he seems to want to shoot an imaginary-argumentative arrow at his discussion partners.

e) Acarya Vimalamitra (8th century), seated, to his right the khakkhara in his left hand the alms bowl.
Each framed and glazed. (5)
