A gilt bronze figure of Buddha Shakyamuni. In the style of the Wei dynasty

Seated in meditation on a square base with waisted central section. Both hands placed on top of each other, with the backs of the hands facing the viewer. The monk's robe covers the whole body in numerous parallel folds. The high coiffure is marked by a large swirl above the forehead and below the ushnisha. Behind the figure a nimbus and a high petal-shaped aureole. At the front and back of the socle a seated Buddha flanked by donor figures, at the sides lion masks, at the back of the aureole Shakyamuni and Prabhutaratna facing each other.

A very similar figure, dated into the first half of the 5th century, formerly housed in the Shodō hakubutsukan (Calligraphy museum) in Tokyo, sold at Christie's, Hong Kong, 29.10.2001, lot 502 and again at Christie's, New York, 20.3.2014, lot 1602.
