Diana and Actaeon
Italy, late 17th / first quarter 18th C.

Glass panel painted on reverse in opaque and transparent pigments. Carved softwood frame gilded over red bole, H 30.5, W 37 cm.

The composition of this finely executed reverse glass painting has been known since the Renaissance. The Albertina collection in Vienna contains a woodcut by Master IB with the Bird, from the first third of the 16th century, which already shows the same arrangement. On the left we see Actaeon, surprised by his transformation into a stag, and on the right Diana and her retinue standing naked in the water.

Provenance

Auctioned by Hermann Historica, Grasbrunn near Munich, 2020.
