The Queens of Persia at the Feet of Alexander
Switzerland, 18th C.

Glass panel painted on reverse with gold highlights and opaque and transparent pigments under black. Retouches to the upper left area of the sky. Ebonised and gilt softwood frame, H 26.7, W 36.8 cm.

This reverse glass painting reproduces a mirrored version of Sébastien Le Clerc the Elder's (1637 - 1714) etching after a work by the French court painter Charles Le Brun (1619 - 1690) from 1661 entitled "Les reines de Perse aux pieds d'Alexandre dit aussi la tente de Darius", which is still housed in Versailles. The painting was distributed as an etching in the "Historischer Bilder Bibel" (Historic Illustrated Bible) of the Augsburg engraver and publisher Johann Ulrich Krauß (1655 - 1719) in 1705.
This lot includes the corresponding plate from the illustrated Bible.
