The Holy Family
Spengler family of painters, Konstanz, first half 18th C.

Glass panel painted on reverse in eglomisé technique with gold and silver leaf and opaque and transparent pigments. Retouches to Joseph's robe. Painted and gilded softwood frame, H 34.5, W 23.5 cm.

The motif of this finely painted work could have been based on, for example, an engraving by the Antwerp based print maker Hieronymus Wierix (1553 - 1619).
This iconography of the Holy Family originated in the early 17th century. The motif shows the Virgin Mary, Christ and Joseph walking together and is designed to inspire the viewer to follow the correct path in life.
