The deposition from the Cross
Veneto or Tyrol, 16th C.

Moulded glass panel painted on reverse in eglomisé technique with gold and silver leaf and opaque and transparent pigments against black ground. Minor retouches to the white. Softwood frame, gilded over red bole H 29.8, W 23 cm.

The model for this motif was probably a clair-obscur woodcut by the book illustrator Ugo da Carpi (c. 1470 - 1532), who worked in Venice and Rome, after a drawing by Raphael (1483 - 1520), which is dated around 1518. One copy can be found in the collection of The British Museum (mus. no. W.4.12).
