Allegory of winter
Vincenz Janke, Northern Bohemia, first third 19th C.

Glass panel painted on reverse in opaque and transparent pigments against black ground. Unsigned. Softwood frame gilded over red bole, H 26.7, W 19 cm.

This reverse glass painting is based on the sheet "Der Winter. Hyems." by the Augsburg engraver and publisher Johann Georg Hertel (1700 - 1775), whereby the artist has only reproduced the figure of the gentleman tying his skates but not the two ladies watching him.
