Prince Elector Maximilian III Joseph on horseback
Franz Anton Siebel, 1797.

Glass painted on reverse in eglomisé technique with opaque pigments and gold and silver leaf on black ground. Signed on the reverse "Franz Anton Siebel FECIT: den 31. Mai des Jahres 1797". Localised losses to the upper left. Carved softwood frame gilded over red bole, H 39, W 29 cm.

Born in Frickenhausen, Franconia, in 1777, Franz Anton Siebel is documented as having worked for several years as a silhouette painter in Vienna before learning to paint on glass and in the eglomisé technique at the Silbermann porcelain factory in Lichtenfels. He perfected this technique and went on to become one of the leading artists of his time. Although Siebel died in Lichtenfels in 1842 at the age of 75, very few of his works have survived.
