An important Frankfurt faience dish with the royal Saxon coat of arms

Nine-sided vessel painted with a large coat of arms and four stylised branch motifs to the fan shaped border. Marked F in blue. A round crack to the basal ring, some localised wear to the glaze of the rim. Diameter 33.5 cm.
Frankfurt, after 1675 - 88.

The coat of arms is identified as that of Landgravine Dorothea of Hesse-Darmstadt, née Duchess of Saxe-Gotha, who ruled in the period 1675 - 1688 for her son Ernst Ludwig (1667 - 1739), who was still a minor.
Other lobed dishes with this motif are known to exist, including those in the collections of the Bavarian National Museum in Munich and the Hessian State Museum in Kassel.

Provenance

Private collection, Hesse.
