These two bronze sculptures are copies of Hellenistic or Roman statues made of greyish black marble from Laconia (Greece), which are now in the Capitoline Museums in Rome. The hands of the older centaur are tied behind his back, while the younger one is smiling and walking with his arm raised. They were originally rode on by Erotes, as in the preserved older centaur in the Louvre. The two sculptures were excavated in 1736 by Cardinal Giuseppe Alessandro Furietti (1684 - 1764) in Hadrian's villa in Tivoli and were named after him.
