Mechelen early 16th century

An early 16th century Mechelen figure of Saint Anthony

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened. Extensive remains of original polychromy, only partially overpainted in the darker areas. A finely carved depiction of the hermit Saint Anthony in the garb of a monk with a hood. He stands in a gently swaying pose, facing slightly to one side. His identifying attribute is the pig which we see at his feet, and he also holds an open book in his left hand. The stamp of the city of Mechelen is faintly visible on the reverse of the piece.
The right forearm missing, a loss to one side of the plinth. Minor wear throughout. Loosely mounted to an older, associated wooden bracket. Height 34.5 cm (with socle).
