Southern Netherlands circa 1510/1520

A carved oak Corpus Christi, Southern Netherlands, around 1510/1520

Carved in the round and partially free standing. Arms visibly separately attached, the droplets of blood separately carved and attached. Minor remains of former polychromy. An expressive and finely carved depiction of Christ crucified with three nails. The figure's remarkable facial features and long hair hanging down from beneath the crown of thorns find parallels in depictions of Christ from the southern Netherlands in the early 16th century.
Parallel cracks to the top of the head and left chest. Two fingertips lost, one toe replaced. Minor wear. Height of corpus 83 cm. Width of arms 53 cm. The newer, associated cross 112 x 62 cm.

Provenance

Presumably the Langenscheid collection (label on the reverse of the cross). - Private collection, Turnhout from 1985 to 2018, subsequently by descent in family ownership, Brussels.
