Shishkin is considered one of the most important landscape painters and representatives of naturalism in Russian painting. His style was based on analytical studies of nature, as this view of a forest demonstrates. Pine trees are a frequently recurring motif in Shishkin's works. The light that permeates the entire image and the clear, bright colours that create the impression of a warm, sunlit summer day are typical of his work.
