George Henrik Breitner

View of the Nieuwe Teertuinen in Amsterdam

Oil on canvas. 80 x 117 cm.
Signed lower right: G H Breitner.

This painting shows the view from the artist's studio of the Nieuwe Teertuinen, the only place in Amsterdam where the flammable material tar was allowed to be stored. Breitner worked at this studio on Prinseneiland 24b from 1898 to 1914 and painted several views of the Nieuwe Teertuinen, for example the slightly smaller version housed in the Museum Singer in Laren. The sketchy composition of this work, the bold brushstrokes and the reduced, almost monochromatic, colour palette are typical of the artist's late works.
