The Baptism of Christ

Cornelis Ketel was primarily characterised as a portrait painter, but in his few allegorical or religious motifs he was one of the main figures of Mannerism in the north, together with Hendrick Goltzius and Cornelis van Haarlem. In Amsterdam, interest in Michelangelesque forms was awakened from the 1580s onwards, above all by Sadeler's engravings. They are also reflected in this drawing by Ketel.
