View of the Rhine Valley from a castles terrace

Born in Kassel, the painter and etcher Johann Erdmann Hummel joined the painting class of the court painter and later Kassel academy director Wilhelm Böttner in 1786. In 1792, he travelled to Rome and joined the painters around Asmus Jacob Carstens, Johann Christian Reinhart, Josef Anton Koch and Friedrich Bury.
In 1799 he returned to Kassel for a short time, but shortly afterwards went to Berlin, where, apart from a few short trips, he stayed for the rest of his life.
In 1808, Hummel travelled to Holland, possibly also visiting the Rhine. Watercolours with views of Oberwesel and Trechtinghausen are further evidence that he travelled along the Rhine.
