Georg Wilhelm Wanderer

Young waiter in traditional Munich costume

Oil on canvas. 50 x 41,5 cm.

Both the subject and the style of this unsigned painting suggest an attribution to the Rothenburg-born painter Johann Georg Wanderer. A comparison with his signed painting "Alt Münchner Kellnerin", dated 1841 (Neumeister, Munich 28 March 2015, lot 408), for example, is convincing.
Wanderer began his training at the Munich Academy in 1820 at the age of 16. Afterwards, he mainly focussed on portrait painting, in which he was particularly inspired by Stieler. He was characterised by his tendency to depict his subjects in great detail. This is also the case here: The young waitress's bonnet, necklace, corset lace and blue scarf are drawn just as accurately as the tray with the Nymphenburg porcelain and the bread roll. The pretty young woman is obviously serving a Bavarian officer who is not averse to the pleasures of tobacco. Pipe and tobacco pouch as well as helmet and sword are proof of this.
