A large Nezumi-Shino chawan. Mino area, Owari province. Early Edo period, 17th century

Of cylindrical shape with horizontal grooves to the body and with an everted rim, on a very low foot, covered by a white crackled glaze and a grey glaze, exposing the foot, reserved from the grey glaze a kind of net pattern possibly a fishing net and stylised pine trees. Wooden box, the lid inscribed: Nezumi-Shino Mino ko-gama (Nezumi-Shino, old kiln in Mino) and signed Taku shiki and sealed Taku.

Katō Takuo (1917-2005) was an important potter and researcher of production techniques of ancient ceramics, especially Persian luster ware and ceramics from the Mino area.
