A Kuro-Raku summer chawan. Kyoto. Edo period, 18th century

of low, almost hemispherical shape with a single horizontal notch, on a thick foot ring. The dark shard covered with a porous black glaze that exposes the foot. Stamped Raku inside the foot ring. Wooden box, the back of the lid inscribed: Sa'nyu kuro chawan, signed with kao. Shifuku.
Height 6.7 cm; diameter 12.4 cm

After the retirement of his father-in-law in 1708, Sanyu (1685-1739) succeeded as the 6th generation Raku, which he held until his retirement in 1728.
The signature on the reverse of the lid belongs to Sokan Fushikisai (1780-1854), fifth generation tea master of the Horiuchi family of the omotesenke school.
