A Kyoto Aka-Raku chawan. Edo period, 19th century

Of almost vertically rising shape on a small foot ring, the shard covered with a salmon-coloured, glossy glaze over a thin white slip, leaving the foot exposed. Stamped Raku inside the foot ring. Wooden box. Shifuku.
Height 8 cm; diameter 11.2 cm

This piece bears an official Raku-seal by Tan'nyu (1795-1854), the second son of Ryo'nyu, who succeeded his father as the 10th head of the Raku family after the early death of his elder brother in 1811.
