A painted wood netsuke of blind man. First half 19th century

Standing with a staff and head turned to the side, the loosely worn garment revealing one shoulder, the hakama painted light green, the inside of the sleeves red and the skin painted white.

The blind man represented here does not have a glaucoma but is completely blind. Both eyes are closed, and the thin lips pressed together are indicative of his sad fate.
