An Edo wood and coral netsuke of a boy with a hozuki by Miwa. Early 19th century

Seated and pulling open the husk of a physalis and thereby revealing the red fruit inside, actually a coral bead, as a sign of his efforts he has shed off the sleeve of his right arm. The eyes of glass with the eye pupils painted black, the upper teeth of bone, both himotoshi openings lined with horn and green stained bone. Signed Miwa and incised seal. Tiny chips.
This is a typical work by the Miwa workshop which was active for three generation. The eyes of glass were inset through an opening on the head which was subsequently closed by a peg carved into a top knot surrounded by hair.
