An exceptional rhinoceros horn cup with fitted wooden stand. Qing dynasty, 18th century or earlier

Carved with a continuous rocky landscape and a pine trunk, which together with a thick branch forms the handle of the cup, and whose branches with tufts of needles reach over the rim into the cup. Two scholars stand on the narrow side of the cup, one of them points to the waterfall that feeds a stream with a bridge. Trees with differing foliage grow on rocks, becoming smaller towards the top and thus suggesting an aerial perspective; a temple complex with a pagoda on one of the rocks. The underside is carved with waves and rocks.
The fitted wooden stand carved with a tree trunk surrounded by lingzhi clouds and five bats. Weight 390 g.
